Recording Academy to Proceed With Asian Pop Grammy Category

Published 2 October 2026

The Recording Academy will proceed with its Asian Pop Music Performance category at the 2027 Grammy Awards, CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said, following consultations with artists and industry figures and feedback that included both support and opposition to the award. Mason said the Academy had held listening sessions and discussions with leaders in the Asian music community. He acknowledged that some people opposed continuing the category, while saying the strongest feedback came from creators who supported it. The Academy said it had received a “robust” number of submissions, but did not provide a total or a comparison with other categories. The decision confirms the category will be included in the 2027 awards cycle after the Academy had signaled it was reviewing the plan. The award was announced in June as part of changes for the ceremony. The Academy says its rules remain subject to review and that discussions about how category requirements may evolve are ongoing. BTS has said it will not submit music for Grammy consideration in 2027. The group said it hoped music could be heard and appreciated without being divided by region or language.
