Real Madrid rally from 3-1 down to beat Roma 4-3
Real Madrid came from two goals down to beat Roma 4-3 in the Champions League on Wednesday, scoring three times from corners in the closing minutes to secure the win in Rome. Roma led 3-1 after Donyell Malen scored twice early in the second half, following goals by Marten de Roon and Kylian Mbappé in the opening half. Mbappé’s equalizer came on his 100th Champions League appearance, according to match reports. Real Madrid began its comeback late in the match. Carlos Espí scored after Roma goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini failed to hold a header, then Endrick levelled with a header from an Arda Güler corner. Antonio Rüdiger completed the turnaround with the third goal, also following a corner. The reports differ by a minute or two on the timing of some late goals, but agree on the scoring sequence and final result. The result came at the Stadio Olimpico, where José Mourinho returned to face Roma, the club he previously managed. Roma had appeared in control after Malen’s second goal extended its lead, but conceded three times in the closing stages. The late sequence turned a match in which the home side had led by two goals into a Real Madrid victory.
