Madrid beats Villarreal as Vinícius sees red

Published 11 October 2026

Real Madrid beat Villarreal 1-0 on October 10, but the victory was followed by Vinícius Júnior’s dismissal after a video review overturned what he thought was a second goal. The forward was sent off for pulling Nathan Saliba’s hair in the buildup, and the disciplinary ruling that will determine any suspension remains pending. Yan Diomande scored the winner in the second half. Vinícius, who entered as a substitute, celebrated after putting the ball in the net, but referee Isidro Díaz de Mera reviewed the preceding play at the video monitor. He disallowed the goal and showed Vinícius a red card for the hair pull, leaving Madrid to finish with 10 players. Vinícius later apologized to his teammates and the club’s fans in a social media post. He had come on shortly after halftime, and his appearance ended with the dismissal. His suspension length has not been determined by the Spanish Football Federation’s Disciplinary Committee. The potential ban could affect Madrid’s next fixtures, including its October 25 match against Barcelona, known as El Clásico.
