Philadelphia Officer Dies After Two Are Shot on Call

Published 10 October 2026

Two Philadelphia police officers were shot while responding to a call in West Philadelphia early Saturday, and a suspect was taken into custody, according to officials. Later reporting said one officer, Shane Seiber, died after surgery; the condition of the second officer was not updated in the supplied reports. Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said at a news conference that the officers were dispatched shortly after 12:20 a.m. to a report of a man with a gun on a porch in the 100 block of North 52nd Street. They arrived about 30 minutes later and came under gunfire on the porch, he said. An officer found them wounded at the scene, and both were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center for surgery. Bethel said a 40-year-old officer was shot three times and a 33-year-old officer was shot 12 times. He said their conditions were unclear at the time. A later report identified the 40-year-old officer as Seiber and said he died after surgery, with family members at the hospital before his death. The available reports did not provide a subsequent outcome for the other officer. Bethel said the suspect also fired at two additional officers.
