Federal Officer Shoots Man During Marble Hill Operation

Published 10 October 2026

A federal immigration officer shot Oscar Belgal during an enforcement operation in Marble Hill on Thursday, October 8, leaving the 28-year-old hospitalized and his five-year-old son unharmed. Belgal was later taken from the hospital into federal custody, according to Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The circumstances that led to the shooting remain disputed. The Department of Homeland Security said Belgal accelerated his vehicle toward officers before an agent fired. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said city police were not involved in the federal operation and were not present when shots were fired. She described surveillance footage showing the vehicle move forward and out of camera range, but the shooting itself was not captured. The available footage, as described by Tisch, does not establish what happened immediately before the officer fired. NYPD officers arrived afterward, found Belgal handcuffed and took him for medical care, Tisch said. He was treated at NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital. His son was not injured and was later in the care of a family member, according to reports.
