Modi Putin to Discuss Defense, BRICS Ahead of Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin are scheduled to hold bilateral talks in New Delhi on September 11, ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit. The meeting is expected to focus on deepening the longstanding defense partnership between India and Russia, alongside discussions on trade, energy, and broader geopolitical issues. Key defense discussions are anticipated to include the delivery of the final S-400 air defense system. India signed a $5.43 billion deal in 2018 for five S-400 systems, with four units already delivered. The fifth and final system has reportedly faced delays linked to the Russia-Ukraine war, but Russia has indicated its commitment to fulfilling the obligation. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Moscow will uphold its contractual commitments. Another significant defense topic is expected to be Russia's Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jet. Moscow is reportedly pushing for sales to India, with discussions also encompassing the possibility of technology transfer and local production. India has increasingly prioritized domestic defense manufacturing, making technology sharing a crucial aspect of potential agreements.
