Ukraine contracts 1,000 Patriot missiles, Germany sends aid

Ukraine is contracting for approximately 1,000 missiles for its U.S.-designed Patriot air defense systems, with support from allies and funding from a European Union loan. Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara announced the move on Tuesday, emphasizing the urgent need for air defense as Russia continues its large-scale attacks on Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure. While the contracts are being signed, Khmara cautioned that the majority of the contracted missiles are not expected to be delivered until the coming years. He urged allies to provide interceptor missiles from their existing stockpiles immediately, proposing that these could be replenished later with upgraded missiles from Ukraine's future contracts. Germany has pledged to send urgently needed PAC2 interceptor missiles to Ukraine from its own military reserves, according to German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. He stated that these missiles would come from existing Bundeswehr stocks rather than future deliveries, acknowledging the balance between national security requirements and support for Ukraine.
