Uganda Withdraws From Invictus Games Citing King Charles

Uganda's military chief, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, announced on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, that the country is withdrawing from the Invictus Games. The decision, communicated via the social media platform X, was attributed to a desire to show reverence for King Charles III and a refusal to participate in any initiative lacking the British monarch's formal approval. General Kainerugaba, who is also the son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, stated, "In order not to be construed as being opposed to His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom, whom we deeply revere, Uganda hereby withdraws from the Invictus Games. We shall not participate in anything that does not have His Majestys approval." He also referred to the charitable event in separate comments as "Harry-Meghan nonsense," suggesting internal factions within the Ministry of Defence supported such elements. Uganda had joined the Invictus community in July, becoming the 26th participating nation and the first from East Africa.
