Argentina Sues Oil Firm Over Falklands Drilling

Argentina has initiated criminal proceedings against the Israeli oil firm Navitas Petroleum and its associated companies for allegedly conducting unauthorized oil drilling operations in waters off the Falkland Islands. The legal action escalates a long-standing sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the South Atlantic archipelago, which Argentines refer to as Las Malvinas. According to a statement from the Argentine presidency, the criminal complaint targets Navitas Petroleum and several of its subsidiaries and partners, including Eco Atlantic Oil Gas Ltd. The core allegation is that these entities violated Argentine law by obtaining and operating under hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation licenses issued by the United Kingdom in the North Falkland Basin. Argentina maintains that such licenses are granted by an "illegitimate government" and infringe upon its sovereign rights. The legal action centers on the Sea Lion offshore oil project, which is operated by Navitas Petroleum, holding a 65% stake, with the British company Rockhopper Exploration holding the remaining 35%.
