Mandhana becomes leading run-scorer in women's T20Is

Indian cricketer Smriti Mandhana became the leading run-scorer in women's T20 international cricket during her team's Asian Games semifinal victory over Bangladesh on Sunday. The milestone was achieved at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan, as India advanced to the gold medal match. Mandhana reached the landmark in the third over of India's innings, needing just eight runs to surpass New Zealand's Suzie Bates, who held the previous record of 4,758 runs. The left-handed opener hit a boundary off Bangladesh pacer Marufa Akter to move to the top of the all-time list. She went on to score 37 runs off 19 balls, including five fours and two sixes, before being caught on the final ball of the powerplay. Her innings helped India post a total of 195 for 4 in their 20 overs. Fellow opener Shafali Verma was the top scorer, hitting an unbeaten 100 from 49 balls. India then bowled out Bangladesh for 81 runs in 15.4 overs, winning by 114 runs. The victory sets up a gold medal match against Sri Lanka on Tuesday, a rematch of the recent Asia Cup final which India won. Sri Lanka advanced to the final after defeating Pakistan by eight wickets in the other semifinal.
