New England coach Fleming targets world number one ranking

Stephen Fleming has been appointed as England's new Test cricket head coach and has immediately set his sights on leading the team to the number one ranking and winning the ICC World Test Championship. The former New Zealand captain, who officially took charge following England's 3-0 series victory over Pakistan, outlined his ambitious goals during his first media engagement at Old Trafford on Saturday. Fleming, who signed a contract until September 2030, stated that his primary aspiration is to elevate England from their current fifth position in the ICC Test rankings to the top spot for the first time since 2012. He also emphasized the importance of improving England's performance in the World Test Championship, a competition in which the team has never reached a final across four editions and currently sits sixth in the standings. "I would love to be in charge of the number one Test team in the world. That would be my aspiration," Fleming said. "If that's one of the pinnacle trophies in world cricket, why would we not be trying to get it along with every other marquee event that comes our way? That opportunity is real, but there's a huge amount of work to do.
