King Charles Clarifies Harry Meghan Private Citizen Status

Published 7 September 2026

King Charles III has issued a clear directive clarifying the status of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle following their recent return to the United Kingdom, reinforcing their position as private citizens and non-working members of the Royal Family. The guidance, distributed via a letter from the King's Lord Chamberlain to senior stakeholders in government, the military, and regional representatives, aims to prevent any confusion regarding the couple's official standing. The letter reiterates that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of the sovereign in January 2020. This decision, which allows the couple personal latitude for financial independence and privacy, remains fully respected and unchanged. Their charitable work is designated as a personal matter undertaken in their private capacity, positioning them akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests. Official styles such as His or Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used by the Duke and Duchess.
