ECI announces byelections for 6 seats October 6

The Election Commission of India announced on Monday, September 7, 2026, that byelections will be held for six seats across four states, including five Assembly constituencies and one Lok Sabha constituency. Polling is scheduled for October 6, 2026, with the counting of votes to take place on October 9, 2026. The entire election process is expected to conclude by October 11, 2026. The Assembly seats going to the polls are Madurantakam SC and Dharapuram SC in Tamil Nadu, Nandigram and Rejinagar in West Bengal, and Thattanchavady in Puducherry. The Lok Sabha constituency in Assam where a byelection will occur is Nagaon. These vacancies were created by the resignations of elected members. In Tamil Nadu, the Madurantakam seat became vacant following the resignation of Maragatham Kumaravel, and the Dharapuram seat became vacant after P. Sathyabama resigned. Both were elected in the 2026 Assembly elections before stepping down. In West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari resigned from Nandigram and Humayun Kabir from Rejinagar. Both had reportedly won two seats and chose to vacate one. In Puducherry, N. Rangasamy vacated the Thattanchavady seat after winning it and another constituency.
