Obi Praises Makinde, Urges Unity in Abuja

Published 7 September 2026

Peter Obi, presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has stated that Seyi Makinde, the presidential candidate for the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and Governor of Oyo State, is qualified to lead Nigeria. Obi made these remarks on Monday, September 7, 2026, at the inauguration of Makinde's presidential campaign office in Abuja. The event, which also saw the commissioning of Makinde's campaign headquarters, served as a platform for Obi to call for national unity ahead of the 2027 general election. He urged political leaders and citizens to unite in an effort to address poverty, hunger, and insecurity plaguing the country. Obi emphasized that the upcoming election should be about the Nigerian people freely choosing their next leader, rather than being driven by desperation or personal interests. "We want a Nigeria of unity and inclusion," Obi stated, adding that the nation cannot continue on its current trajectory. He highlighted the widespread hunger and poverty among the populace, asserting that the focus should be on improving the lives of Nigerians.
