Journalists detained while covering Delhi protests

Published 12 October 2026

Delhi Police detained journalists covering protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Connaught Place on Sunday, October 11, with several later released, according to reports and media organisations. The accounts describe at least nine journalists detained, while another report put the number at around a dozen. The total number detained was not established across the reports. Those detained included journalists from Indian Express, Hindustan Times, Peek TV and Malayalam news channels, including Asianet News and 24 News. Some reports said Indian Express journalists were taken to Chhatrasal Stadium and later released. Journalists from Malayalam channels were also reported released hours after their detention. Reports described the journalists as covering demonstrations and police action, and said some were displaying press identification cards. The Press Club of India, Indian Women’s Press Corps, Delhi Union of Journalists and the Kerala Union of Working Journalists’ Delhi unit condemned the detentions in a joint statement.
