14-year-old detained after shooting at Aubagne school

Published 12 October 2026

A 14-year-old pupil was detained after a shooting at Joseph-Lakanal middle school in Aubagne on October 12 wounded the principal and a teacher, authorities said. The victims’ injuries were not life-threatening, and officials said no pupils were hurt. Police and prosecutors said the teenager attended the school. A staff member disarmed him before police took him into custody, according to officials including Aubagne Mayor Jean-Pierre Squillari. Authorities said the shooting involved multiple shots. A third person was grazed, police said, but officials provided no further details about that person’s identity or condition. The shooting took place in Aubagne, near Marseille in southern France. Officials said the principal and teacher were taken to hospital. Police said ammunition used in 12-gauge shotguns struck the two staff members. Prosecutors said the suspect had concealed a hunting rifle in a guitar case; accounts of the weapon’s exact description varied. The Bouches-du-Rhône police department said the suspect’s motive was unknown.
