Delhi Police removes Jantar Mantar from protest venues

Published 12 October 2026

Delhi Police has removed Jantar Mantar from its list of designated protest venues and named three alternative grounds for demonstrations in the capital, under an order dated October 11. The order partially amends a standing order issued on April 28, 2022. The new venues are Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in East Delhi. The order says the change follows recommendations from a committee set up by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to examine alternative locations for protests. It was signed by Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar. Delhi Police said it would issue revised standard operating procedures separately for demonstrations at the three grounds. The order does not set out the detailed rules or permission process that will apply at the replacement sites. The decision came as the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) sought permission to hold a peaceful demonstration at Jantar Mantar. CJP spokesperson Saurav Das said the party had notified police of its proposed protest but had not received a date or an explanation for restrictions. He said the party had given police 24 hours to respond and would announce a march if it did not hear back.
