IMF chief warns AI could reshape 40% of global jobs

Published 12 October 2026

International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva warned that artificial intelligence could affect about 40% of jobs worldwide over time, either by changing the work people do, reducing the value of some roles or eliminating positions. She said younger workers could face particular difficulty if routine entry-level jobs that help people start careers and gain experience become less available. Georgieva made the remarks on October 12 at the IMF-World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok. The estimate describes jobs that may be augmented, downgraded or eliminated; it does not mean that 40% of jobs will necessarily disappear. The eventual net effect on employment remains uncertain. She warned that AI-driven changes could also complicate government finances. If economic activity shifts away from labour and toward capital, governments could face pressure on revenues traditionally supported by income taxes, she said. Georgieva urged policymakers to track changes in employment, draw lessons and help people adapt, including through education and lifelong learning.
