IDF Says 170 Gaza Media Figures Belonged to Armed Groups

Published 2 October 2026

The Israel Defense Forces said it had identified 170 people killed during the Gaza war and publicly described as journalists or media workers as members of armed groups. The military said its review found 118 were affiliated with Hamas’s military wing, 49 with Palestinian Islamic Jihad, two with the Popular Resistance Committees and one with the Mujahideen Brigades. The claims and classifications have not been independently verified in the material available, and the figures use categories that are not directly reconciled with a separate toll reported by Gaza’s government media office. The IDF said its review drew on intelligence, open-source material and documents recovered in Gaza, including records produced by armed groups. It said it published names and supporting information in a dedicated database. The military’s announcement described the listed people as members of armed groups, but the supplied information does not establish how many were actively serving as combatants or detail the evidence for each individual classification. The IDF also said 17 people on its list crossed into Israel during the October 7, 2023, attack.
