ICC Reprimands Powell and Rutherford After Ranchi T20I

Published 12 October 2026

The International Cricket Council reprimanded West Indies players Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford after separate Level 1 Code of Conduct breaches during the second T20I against India in Ranchi. Each received one demerit point, according to the ICC’s disciplinary account, which said both accepted the sanctions and did not require formal hearings. Powell was penalized under Article 2.2, concerning abuse of cricket equipment or related items during an international match. The incident occurred in the sixth over of the West Indies innings, after Powell was dismissed by Mayank Yadav. The ICC account said Powell hit the ball away with his bat. Rutherford breached Article 2.8, which concerns dissent at an umpire’s decision. In the 13th over, he reacted aggressively after an umpire ruled that a delivery he believed was wide was legitimate, according to the disciplinary account. The ICC said the one demerit point for each player was their first offence in a 24-month period. Both admitted their offences and accepted the proposed sanctions from match referee Prakash Bhatt, so no formal hearing was held.
