Huawei and Qualcomm Announce 5G Patent Deal
Huawei and Qualcomm have announced a multiyear patent cross-licensing agreement covering 5G, computing, artificial intelligence and other technologies, alongside Qualcomm’s purchase of selected Huawei U.S. patents. Huawei said the transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals, and the companies have not disclosed its value. The agreement covers exchanges of rights across the companies’ patent portfolios. The patents Qualcomm is to acquire include areas such as artificial intelligence, computing and networking, according to the companies’ statements. The reports describe this as the first licensing agreement between Huawei and Qualcomm specifically to include 5G technology. Huawei said that, once the transaction is completed, the total value of its patent licensing agreements will exceed $6.9 billion. That figure is a cumulative total for Huawei’s licensing agreements, not the value of this deal. The agreement’s individual financial value and detailed terms were not provided. Completion depends on regulatory approvals. Until those approvals are obtained and the transaction closes, Huawei’s stated post-completion total does not yet apply.
