HII Wins $5.1 Billion Truman Overhaul Contract
HII has been awarded a contract valued at $5.10 billion to refuel and modernize the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman at Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia. Contract options, if exercised, could raise the cumulative value to $5.18 billion, according to HII. The overhaul, known as a refueling and complex overhaul, or RCOH, will include refueling the ship’s reactors and extensive work across thousands of compartments and tanks and most ship systems. HII said major upgrades are planned for the propulsion plant and combat systems. The shipyard is a division of HII. HII said the project is intended to prepare Truman for the second half of its service life. The company described an RCOH as accounting for nearly one-third of the maintenance and modernization work a carrier receives over its lifetime. Truman will be the eighth Nimitz-class aircraft carrier to undergo an RCOH at Newport News Shipbuilding. The contract amount announced by HII is $5,099,973,132. Its higher cumulative value of $5,183,380,744 depends on options being exercised; that total is not the guaranteed base award. HII did not provide a completion date in the supplied contract announcement.
