Google to migrate Gemini Gems to Skills starting November 17

Google plans to begin automatically moving Gemini Gems to a new feature called Skills on November 17, 2026, according to a notice in Gemini and information from the company’s support materials. Users will be able to keep using their Gems until their accounts migrate, but Google says creating and editing Gems will stop after October 13. Skills are designed to preserve Gems’ core function: giving Gemini reusable custom instructions for particular tasks. Google says users will be able to apply a Skill within an ongoing chat, combine multiple Skills in a conversation and have Gemini automatically recognize when one is relevant to a prompt. Gems, by contrast, have generally required users to open or select them before their instructions take effect. The transition is scheduled to start on November 17; the available information does not establish that migration has begun. Google’s notice says the process will be automatic, while its support information describes how users can create, edit and use Skills. The company has not clearly resolved whether every current Gem feature or account type will carry over.
