Google feature lets UK users select preferred news sources
Google has rolled out a feature that lets users in the United Kingdom choose publications as preferred sources in search results, according to promotional articles published on October 1. The articles describe ways to select local news publications, but do not independently verify the feature’s availability or operation. The instructions say users can add a publication from a button at the bottom of an article, marked with the Google G logo and the words “Add as preferred source on Google.” Alternatively, users can search for a topic, locate the Top Stories section, choose the customization option and select a publication from the list. The publications promoted the feature to readers interested in regional news and sport. WalesOnline encouraged readers to select it for Welsh news, including searches related to Cardiff and Swansea. LeicestershireLive highlighted Leicester City coverage, while the Nottingham Post promoted its publication to readers following Nottingham Forest. Each publication said the selection could lead to more of its content appearing in Google search results.
