Google Tests AI Content Payments to About 100 Publishers
Google is testing payments to about 100 digital publishers whose material is used in its AI features, with reported payouts ranging from less than $1,000 over several months for some small sites to more than $1 million a year for one publisher. The payment formula remains unclear to participants, and the reported figures come largely from a single account of the pilot. The program covers content used in Google AI Overviews and, according to one report, AI Mode and the Gemini chatbot. Publishers participating in the pilot can see an AI contribution panel in Google Search Console, where a monthly payout figure and some payment history are displayed. That panel does not provide a detailed explanation of how Google calculated the amount, according to reporting based on screenshots and publisher accounts. Reported payments vary substantially. Some small and midsize publishers received less than $1,000 over several months, while others’ payments were reported as less than 0.1% of their advertising revenue. One publisher was said to have received roughly $50,000 to $60,000 over a few months; another reportedly earned more than $1 million annually.
