Apple cites safety concerns in ICEBlock removal

Apple told Rep. Jamie Raskin in a July 2026 letter that it removed ICEBlock and similar apps from its App Store after concluding that their location information could create safety risks and violate the company’s app guidelines. The explanation has prompted Raskin to challenge the decision and request an independent review. Apple’s letter said concerns raised by federal officials after a September 2025 shooting at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Dallas were among the factors in a renewed review. The shooting killed two detainees and wounded another. Apple cited then-Attorney General Pam Bondi’s concerns about risks to federal officers and FBI Director Kash Patel’s statement that the shooter had searched for apps tracking ICE agents. Apple said it determined that the apps’ precise location information about officers, and people near them, could expose them to harm. It said ICEBlock and similar apps violated App Store guidelines and were removed in October 2025. ICEBlock remains unavailable. Apple had approved the app in April 2025 after its developer, Joshua Aaron, addressed privacy concerns raised during an initial review, according to the letter as reported.
