Gail Lerner Fired as Showrunner of NBC’s Newlyweds

Gail Lerner has been fired as showrunner of NBC’s upcoming sitcom Newlyweds, with the network confirming that creative differences led to the decision less than two weeks before the series is scheduled to premiere. Lerner announced her departure in an Instagram post on October 9, saying she had been told the reason was creative differences. NBC representatives confirmed that those differences led to the decision to remove her from the show. Neither Lerner nor NBC provided details about the disagreement. Lerner, who co-created the comedy with Jamie Lee Curtis, said the first six episodes were made under her leadership. In her post, she expressed sadness at leaving the production and praised its cast, crew and writers. She also said she remained proud of the work completed on the series. Newlyweds is scheduled to premiere on NBC on October 23, 2026. The sitcom stars Téa Leoni and Tim Daly as a free-spirited woman and a buttoned-up professor who marry after a whirlwind courtship. Curtis also appears in the series as James’ ex-wife. According to a report citing Deadline, production is due to pause next week while Universal Television searches for a replacement showrunner.
