Five men arrested near RAF Fairford released on bail
Five British men arrested near RAF Fairford on suspicion of terrorism and explosives offences have been released on bail while counterterrorism police continue their investigation. Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor said investigators found petrol in vehicles linked to the incident but no improvised explosive devices. The men, all British nationals in their 20s from London, were arrested early Sunday near the Gloucestershire air base after police received reports of suspicious vehicles. They were initially held on suspicion of explosives offences and later arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. Their release on bail does not end the investigation, and police say they remain under investigation and must comply with conditions. Police have not said when they must answer bail. The alert centered on three vehicles near Whelford, about a mile from RAF Fairford. Police said they received a call at 12:45 a.m. Sunday concerning vehicles apparently travelling toward the base. A local farmer separately said she contacted police after seeing vans and masked men nearby at about 1 a.m.
