Texas DPS arrests suspect over alleged Capitol attack plan
The Texas Department of Public Safety arrested Benny Caldera Jr. on September 30 after receiving information about an alleged violent attack planned for October 1 at the Texas Capitol in Austin, the agency said. Caldera, 40, was charged with felony terroristic threat against a public servant. The Capitol remained open, with increased security while the investigation continued. DPS said it received the information on September 29 and that special agents worked overnight with the FBI and local law enforcement before the arrest. DPS SWAT personnel took Caldera into custody at about 3 a.m. at his home in Converse. He was taken to the Bexar County Jail. A notice to Texas senators described by one report, and another account, said he was later released on a $75,000 bond. The planned date, October 1, was identified by DPS in accounts of the information it received. The agency has not publicly detailed what kind of attack was allegedly planned, what evidence supported the information, or who or what was intended to be targeted. The basis and specifics of the alleged threat have not been disclosed in the reports.
