Published 3 November 2026

Two police officers were killed and a third wounded when gunmen opened fire on their vehicle in Pakistan’s Mohmand district as they travelled to protect polio vaccination teams, police said. The shooting took place Tuesday in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, near the Afghan border, according to police official Ali Rehman Khan. The officers were heading to a nearby village to provide security for vaccination workers when the attackers fired on their vehicle. Police officer Ayaz Khan said the assailants were riding a motorcycle and fled. Khan said no vaccination staff were in the police vehicle. No group had claimed responsibility for the attack at the time of reporting, and authorities had not identified the attackers. The shooting came amid security concerns around polio vaccination work in the province. Four officers assigned to protect polio workers were abducted in Tank district on Monday, and district police official Abdul Samad said efforts to recover them were underway. The two incidents occurred in separate districts; police have not established a connection between them. Pakistan began a nationwide polio vaccination campaign targeting 24 million children this week. Reports...
