Connecticut Man Sentenced for Attempting to Support ISIS

A federal judge in Connecticut sentenced Ahmad Khalil Elshazly to 92 months in prison and lifetime supervised release after he pleaded guilty to attempting to provide material support to ISIS, the U.S. Justice Department said. Elshazly, 29, of West Haven, was sentenced on Monday, September 28, according to the reports. He has been in custody since his arrest in December 2019. Prosecutors said Elshazly paid $500 to an undercover agent on December 14, 2019, believing the person could help him leave the United States for Turkey and connect him with an ISIS member who would take him onward to Syria. He was arrested the next day in Stonington, Connecticut, where he expected to board a boat, according to prosecutors. Elshazly pleaded guilty in November 2022 to attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization. Court documents and prosecutors say he had expressed a desire to travel to Syria to fight for ISIS beginning around September 2018, and pledged allegiance to the group and its then-leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
