FCT NLC Declares Indefinite Strike Over Education Disputes
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Federal Capital Territory Council declared an indefinite strike beginning October 7, 2026, directing affiliate unions across public and private sectors to withdraw their services over disputes about teachers’ promotions and the redeployment of senior education officers. The declaration does not establish that workers across the territory complied or that services were broadly disrupted. The council said its decision followed a State Executive Council meeting on Tuesday at Labour House in Abuja and the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum to the FCT Administration. In a statement signed by council chairman Knabayi S. Adalo, the NLC said the administration’s response had not adequately addressed the union’s grievances. It instructed workers to remain away from their posts until further notice. A central demand is the removal of a vacancy requirement that the union says restricts teachers’ promotions. Under the arrangement described by the NLC, advancement depends on a vacant position within the establishment.
