University of Arizona restricts activities for 21 fraternity chapters

Published 7 October 2026

The University of Arizona has temporarily barred activities by all 21 Interfraternity Council chapters while it investigates misconduct reports involving nearly half of them, Dean of Students Chrissy Lieberman said in a letter to the campus Greek community. The interim restriction allows chapter business meetings but prohibits fraternities from hosting, attending, participating in or sponsoring other organizational activities. Lieberman said her office had received reports involving allegations of physical assault, hazing, drugs, alcohol and unsafe conditions. Some cases are also under criminal investigation, she said. The allegations have not been established as findings of responsibility, and the university’s action applies to every chapter, not only those named in individual cases. The dean said the number of organizational cases her office could investigate at one time had reached capacity, and the cases occupying that capacity involved fraternity chapters. The university said it would continue working with campus police on investigations. The reports do not establish how many of the cases will result in disciplinary findings.
