SSANU Reports Release of Eight Months of Salary Arrears
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) says the Federal Government has released eight months of salary arrears owed to its members, after the union threatened an indefinite strike unless outstanding payments under its 2026 agreement were addressed. The reported release does not establish that workers have received the money, and SSANU says other arrears remain unpaid. SSANU President Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim confirmed the release and said members would soon receive payment alerts, according to the union. The report did not specify the sum involved or how many workers were affected. The union had given the government 14 days to act, warning that it would otherwise begin an indefinite strike without further notice. The ultimatum covered outstanding arrears under the 2026 agreement, including payments tied to the Consolidated University Teaching and Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure. SSANU said the agreement took effect on January 1, 2026, and that the arrears were calculated from that date. The union also said it was still seeking two months of salaries withheld during a 2022 industrial action and a year of arrears from 25% and 35% salary increases.
