Endgame Encore earns $86 million, nears Avatar total

Avengers: Endgame Encore earned an estimated $86 million worldwide in its opening rerelease weekend, bringing the 2019 film closer to Avatar’s reported all-time global box-office total. The haul included $26 million in domestic ticket sales and $60 million overseas, according to reported weekend estimates. Endgame has not passed Avatar, and published estimates differ on how much separates the films. The rerelease lifted Endgame’s reported lifetime worldwide gross to about $2.88 billion. Avatar’s total is reported at roughly $2.9 billion to $2.92 billion, leaving a gap of about $35 million to $39 million. Those figures are estimates, and the remaining distance depends on which reported totals are used. Whether Endgame will close it is not yet known. The weekend result put the rerelease ahead of several new releases in box-office rankings. One report described its domestic opening as the third-largest for a rerelease. Disney distribution chief Andrew Cripps called the opening remarkable for a seven-year-old film that remains available to watch at home. The theatrical return, branded Endgame Encore, includes new footage and scenes around the credits.
