Durban judge restricts reporting in AKA murder trial

Published 6 October 2026

A Durban High Court judge has barred journalists from identifying witnesses or reporting their testimony and exhibits as the murder trial of seven men accused of killing rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes and chef Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane began. All seven accused pleaded not guilty, according to reports from the opening of the trial. Judge Nomfundo Sipunzi’s directive allows media to attend and broadcast the proceedings, but prohibits coverage that reveals a witness’s identity or personal details. It also bars publishing or broadcasting witness evidence while it is being given, or exhibits entered in court, unless the court authorizes disclosure. The permitted coverage includes the pleas, opening and closing statements for the state and defence, lawyers’ arguments, court rulings and orders, and the final judgment. Courtroom photographs may be taken only before proceedings begin each day and after adjournment. Cameras and recording equipment must remain stationary and must not disrupt the proceedings. Sipunzi may amend or vary the directive if the interests of justice require it.
