Douglas recounts Basic Instinct relationship in memoir

Published 7 October 2026

Michael Douglas says in his memoir that he had a relationship with Jeanne Tripplehorn while they were making the 1992 film Basic Instinct, and that he considered leaving his first wife, Diandra Luker, for her. Douglas writes that he and Luker were separated at the time and that his relationship with Tripplehorn lasted through production before they went their separate ways. Douglas recounts the relationship in One Helluva Ride, describing himself as having fallen deeply for Tripplehorn. He says he decided against moving directly from a long marriage into another serious relationship, despite considering leaving Luker. The account is Douglas’s own recollection, as presented in the memoir and related comments; the reports do not offer independent confirmation from Tripplehorn. The actor also writes that speculation about a possible romance between him and Basic Instinct co-star Sharon Stone obscured his relationship with Tripplehorn. In his account, the two kept their involvement private during filming. Douglas recalls that their real-life intimacy made some scenes between their characters more difficult to film, though those production details also come from his recollection.
