Discord plans experimental Game Mode to cut CPU and GPU use

Published 29 September 2026

Discord says it will begin rolling out an experimental Game Mode the week after September 29, 2026, designed to reduce the app’s CPU and GPU use while a game is running. The company says the feature will automatically reduce animations and disable effects when it detects a game, with the aim of freeing system resources. Its actual performance impact has not been established. The announced changes target processor and graphics-processor use. The descriptions do not indicate that Game Mode will reduce Discord’s memory, or RAM, consumption. Discord has said it hopes to add more resource-saving features over time, but has not specified whether memory use will be addressed. Game Mode appears to automate adjustments similar to Discord’s existing Reduced Motion setting, which reduces animations and effects. Under the new mode, the changes would be triggered when the app detects a game, rather than requiring users to enable the setting themselves. The available descriptions do not specify which effects will be disabled or quantify any reduction in resource use.
