Digger Opens to $8 Million Domestically
Tom Cruise’s film Digger earned about $8 million in the United States and Canada and $20 million worldwide during its opening weekend, a weak start for the Warner Bros. release. The domestic result put the dark comedy in fifth place, well behind Verity, which led the North American box office with $32.6 million, according to weekend reports. Digger opened in theaters on October 2. Earlier estimates published before the weekend figures were finalized put its domestic debut at about $7.5 million to $8 million; reports after the weekend gave the total as about $8 million. The film’s $12 million in international receipts brought its reported worldwide opening to $20 million. The opening was Cruise’s lowest domestic debut since Lions for Lambs, which took in $6.7 million in 2007, according to reports comparing the films. Digger was directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, who co-wrote it, and stars Cruise as an oil tycoon whose actions trigger an environmental catastrophe. Its supporting cast includes Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, Michael Stuhlbarg and John Goodman. Reports give differing figures for Digger’s production cost.
