Coventry beat Newcastle 4-1 to leave relegation zone

Published 12 October 2026

Coventry City moved out of the Premier League relegation zone on October 12 with a 4-1 home victory over Newcastle United, ending a 25-year wait for a home win in the top flight. The result lifted Frank Lampard’s side from 19th to 14th after successive league victories. Jack Rudoni put Coventry ahead from the penalty spot in the sixth minute after Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek brought down Sidiki Cherif. Newcastle created chances to equalize, but Coventry doubled their lead three minutes after halftime when Cherif scored on his first Premier League start for the club. Sven Botman cut the deficit in the 70th minute, briefly giving Newcastle a route back into the match. Coventry restored their two-goal cushion in the 81st minute when Ellis Simms scored after a defensive error, and substitute Stephen Mfuni added a fourth five minutes later. The victory followed Coventry’s 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest before the international break. The club had lost its opening four league matches without scoring, and its earlier home fixtures had brought defeats. The Newcastle result marked its second consecutive league win and its first Premier League home victory since 2001.
