Nepal-China Border Rescue Halted as Glacial Lake Overflows

Rescue operations along the Nepal-China border were suspended on Friday, August 28, after a barrier lake formed by debris from a catastrophic glacial collapse began overflowing, raising the threat of another devastating flood. The pause came as the confirmed death toll from Wednesday’s disaster rose to 472, with more than 1,500 people still missing. The crisis began on August 26 when a high-altitude glacier collapsed, sending a massive torrent of rock, ice, and mud into river systems below. The destructive flow swept through villages along the Himalayan border, destroying buildings, bridges, and roads.
