49ers' Dre Greenlaw appeals one-game suspension for headbutt
The NFL has suspended San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw for one game without pay after he headbutted Seattle Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV during a second-quarter sideline confrontation. The league said the act violated its unsportsmanlike-conduct rule. Greenlaw is appealing, according to NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport, leaving the suspension’s status unresolved pending a decision. Greenlaw was ejected from San Francisco’s October 11 game after the incident, which occurred during the 49ers’ 32-29 win over Seattle. The confrontation followed a separate play in which Greenlaw was penalized for hitting Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold after he had gone out of bounds. Seahawks players approached Greenlaw, and he and Jones exchanged words before Greenlaw, wearing his helmet, struck Jones, who was not wearing one. The NFL’s statement cited Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which covers conduct contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship. League officials said the replay office directed the ejection.
