14-year-old arrested after shooting at Aubagne school

Published 12 October 2026

A 14-year-old pupil was arrested on October 12 after a headmaster and a teacher were shot at Joseph-Lakanal middle school in Aubagne, French authorities said. Police said the staff members’ injuries were not life-threatening and no pupils were injured. The shooting took place in the town near Marseille in southern France. The school’s headmaster and a teacher were wounded by gunfire, according to Education Minister Édouard Geffray and police. Authorities said the detained teenager attended the school. Marseille prosecutors confirmed the arrest. Police said the suspect’s motive was unknown. They reported no immediate indication that the shooting was connected to protests by high-school pupils that had taken place across France in recent weeks. The middle school was not affected by those protests, police said. Police also said a third person was grazed during the shooting. The mayor of Aubagne said no pupils were hurt and that mental-health counseling was being offered to students. The reports did not specify the third person’s identity or provide further details about their condition.
