Pupil detained after fatal stabbing at Slovak school

A 13-year-old pupil was detained after a stabbing at an elementary school in Staškov, northwestern Slovakia, that killed a teacher and seriously injured another teacher and a pupil, authorities said Tuesday. Police said they were investigating the suspect for murder and that the situation was under control, with no further threat to the public reported. The teacher who died was a 61-year-old woman, emergency-service representatives said. The injured pupil was in critical condition, Health Minister Kamil Šaško said. The other injured person, a female teacher, was hospitalized with serious injuries. Reports differed on her age, so it could not be established from the available information. The attack took place in Staškov, a village near the Czech border. Authorities did not establish a motive in their initial statements. Education Minister Tomáš Drucker declined to say whether bullying was involved, according to one account.
