Central Park Pedestrian Dies Four Days After Cyclist Collision

Richard O’Brien, a 41-year-old steamfitter and father of two, died early September 27, four days after a cyclist struck him as he walked to work in Central Park, according to his family and police accounts. The New York Police Department said the 32-year-old cyclist suffered minor injuries and remained at the scene. Investigators were still reviewing how the collision happened as of September 29, and it was unclear whether the rider would face charges. O’Brien was walking through the park at about 6:30 a.m. on September 23 when he was hit by a man riding a pedal bicycle, according to police and a family fundraiser. The collision left O’Brien with a severe brain injury. He was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition before dying with his wife, Ronni, by his side, the fundraiser said.
