Zelenskyy reports Russian strikes leave 600,000 without power
Russian forces launched 39 ballistic missiles and more than 120 drones at Ukrainian energy and critical infrastructure overnight into October 14, leaving at least 600,000 people without electricity, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. He reported deaths and injuries but did not provide a casualty count. The attack targeted Kyiv, the surrounding Kyiv region and Kharkiv, according to Zelenskyy. He said the strikes damaged equipment at 26 power-system facilities and four oil-and-gas facilities. Repair crews, power company staff and the State Emergency Service were working to restore electricity on Wednesday morning, he said. Zelenskyy said the missiles struck energy infrastructure covered by an energy ceasefire announced by U.S. President Donald Trump. The scope of that proposal is disputed. A White House official said it initially covered oil refineries, with power plants and electricity grids potentially included later. Moscow had not confirmed accepting the proposal, and Russia’s Defense Ministry had not commented on the reported targets. The attack’s scale and effects were described by Zelenskyy, whose figures were repeated in reports of the strikes.
