Two arrested in Waterford fire that killed four

Published 15 October 2026

An Garda Síochána arrested a man in his 20s and a woman in her 30s on October 15 in connection with a house fire in Waterford that killed four members of the English family. The arrests were made on suspicion of offences under section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act 2006, which concerns offences involving criminal organisations, Gardaí said. The fire broke out shortly after 5 a.m. on October 13 at a home on Birch Avenue in the Birchwood area of Waterford City. Philip and Kim English and their sons Callum, 12, and Jayden, nine, died. Two other children were taken to Children’s Health Ireland Crumlin, where they remain in critical condition, according to Garda updates. The two arrested people are being detained at a Garda station in the Eastern Region. Their arrests do not establish responsibility for the deaths. The investigation is ongoing, and the supplied information does not identify who caused the fire or establish a motive. Gardaí said postmortem examinations on the four people who died have been completed, but results are being withheld for operational reasons. The house remains a crime scene while the Garda Technical Bureau conducts a technical examination.
