Trump Has Not Confirmed Reported AI Role for Jay Clayton
President Donald Trump has not confirmed reports that he plans to appoint Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton to a new artificial intelligence role, and the White House has described the reports as speculation. Several reports citing people familiar with the discussions said Clayton was expected to be selected as an AI czar, but no formal appointment has been announced. Trump said on Truth Social in September that he planned to create an AI Force and name an AI czar. He compared the proposed force to the Space Force, according to reports, and said the initiative would address the fast-growing AI sector. The White House official said any personnel announcement would come directly from Trump. The reports have not established whether Clayton would take on the AI position while retaining his current intelligence post or leave that job. Nor have they detailed the proposed czar’s authority, responsibilities or the structure of the AI Force. Trump’s direct announcement would be needed to confirm both the selection and any change to Clayton’s duties. Clayton was confirmed by the Senate in July to lead the intelligence community.
