Trump and AI Leaders Sign Voluntary Safety Accord

President Donald Trump and six technology executives signed a voluntary agreement on September 29 calling for companies to strengthen safeguards for advanced artificial intelligence systems through internal controls, independent external audits and board-level review. The accord leaves companies responsible for implementing the measures and is not legally enforceable. The agreement, which Trump posted on social media, says participating companies should monitor their systems and have an outside auditor assess whether their controls are working. Committees within company boards would review findings from internal and external auditors. The document also says it may make sense over time to codify the steps into laws or regulations, but it does not itself establish binding rules. Trump called the commitment morally binding and said the companies would police their own work. The participating executives included Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAI President Greg Brockman, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and xAI founder Elon Musk. House Speaker Mike Johnson also attended the White House meeting.
