Trump backs proposal for Florida presidential retreat

Published 7 October 2026

President Donald Trump has endorsed a proposal to establish a permanent presidential retreat on part of Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, but the plan remains under consideration by Palm Beach County and federal officials. It would require county-owned land to be provided to the federal government, and no approval or final arrangement has been announced. Trump told reporters on October 7 that the retreat would be intended for future presidents, rather than primarily for his own use. He said the military and Secret Service had suggested the site and cited its proximity to the airport and the absence of tall buildings overlooking the golf course. The agencies had not independently confirmed an assessment of the location in the available reporting. The proposal was brought to county officials in a letter submitted in September by a lawyer representing the golf club, according to reports describing the document. Reuters said it could not immediately confirm the letter’s contents. As described by the club’s lawyer and in accounts of the proposal, Trump would pay to build a presidential residence and related facilities.
